Here is a good example of the very first stage of chasing down a song for me. Typically, I come up with a chord structure idea and just make up random words & phrases on top of it to try and find a melody to work with later. I then go back and write the lyrics (sometimes I get good ideas from the random stuff I say...sometimes I don't and it changes completely). This is a good sample of what the first step of that process sounds like.
