Daedalus - Seth Reeves (Siberian Traps)

about

I wrote Daedalus a few weeks ago shortly after I started reading James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the protagonist of which is named "Stephen Dedalus". I had vague idea of the song's music and lyrical content kicking for a bit longer than that, based on the experience of seeing my daughter stand outside in the blowing wind, yelling angrily at it because it was messing up some game she was playing. The whole thing is sort of a reverie from a parent's perspective as you watch your child get older, develop a sense of self, and the dreams that inevitably come with it. Daedalus, of course, refers to the Greek myth of Icarus and his father Daedalus. His invention pf the wax-and-feather wings provided a means of escape for himself and his son, but Icarus, with the exuberance of youth, couldn't handle the freedom responsibly and plunged to his death.

I recorded this demo of it under a small bridge in my neighborhood during the early afternoon. I like the echo-y acoustics of the space and that you can hear the birds and other ambient sounds. I wanted the take to have a liquid feel because of both the lyrical content and the persistent drone in the guitar part, so the location seemed a good fit.
